The brief was to design a new and unique cover for Louis Sachar's Holes. I wanted to pay a little homage to the previous covers, having often focused on the yellow spotted lizard. However, what was most important to me was to truly reflect the story; Stanley digs up quite a few secrets on his journey, and I wanted to hint at some of these. I particularly was interested in reflecting a few elements of Kate Barlow's story, as two different time periods at Camp Green Lake interweave throughout the book. While this design was the one I felt was the most suitable for a unique new cover, there were a few other designs I created that I couldn't quite let go: |
My designs went through several iterations, as I wanted to develop a few different ideas before settling on just one. I was quite set on one particular design for a while, the lizard with its yellow spots turning into desert dunes and holes. It reflected quite nicely the original cover of desert, sky and lizard; however it felt a bit bland, and even after refreshing the style to suit a younger audience, I felt it was too similar to previous covers. The benefits of the design I eventually chose were that I could hint at more interesting elements of the story (but I still got to keep the lizard).
