The aim of this project was to adapt an existing piece of writing into a wordless narrative. The challenge was to keep the story clear and understandable without the need for text, especially within a limited space (as this was only the first chapter, I also needed to find a resolution for the ending).
I found myself most interested in the themes of depression running through the chapter. It is represented literally by a smog smothering the whole town with sadness. I found it telling how each of the three main characters all try and deal with it alone - running away, suffering in silence, pretending it's not there. Yet it is only by finding comfort in each other that they can keep it at bay for a while. Visually, I was exploring techniques such as colour separation to make use of a limited colour palette, while demonstrating the emotional impact that framing can impart on a story. |
