This Advent Calendar was born out of one word: illumination. To 'illuminate' is 'to shine' or 'to shed light on', originally referencing the gold ink commonly used to brighten manuscripts. From this, illustration was born, which now sheds light in many other ways; bringing a story to life, explaining a concept, commenting on society.
I created my own typeface for this, as I really wanted to reflect the exaggerated shapes of traditional illuminated letters that give them such character as well as allowing enough space to fit images within and around them.
The use of modular typography gave the set a real sense of identity.
And to add one last bit of illumination:
This advent calendar was designed for Instagram, and in playing with the grid format, I wanted to create a background that would slowly reveal a wintery landscape as each new image was posted.
